I went looking with the chinese USB endoscope and found a loose block plug.

I cleaned the plug, pinged it back in tight with a punch and hammer (had to remove the hydraulic pump to reach) and then covered it up with this stuff.

Leak free.

At least it got new gaskets, water pump, coolant hoses, and some much needed paint touchup.

That’s about as lucky as you can get under these circumstances...

I think I'm going to have to get one of those endoscopy thingys.

I did a similar thing the other day. I was getting a secondary air pump CEL on my 99 golf. I had noticed the pump whine a couple of weeks ago, and thought it might be going. A couple weeks pass and I go to look at it. So I popped the hood and had my wife start the car. Not hearing the pump start (its a noticeable whine) I tap the pump with a screwdriver and it starts right up. Turns out, the whine is normal, and I only noticed it because a couple of weeks back because the car was in the garage with the hood open (spark plug change). I just never noticed it when I started it outside. For timing, I never noticed it takes about 10 seconds from start to it spooling up. So when I tapped it, it had nothing to do with me tapping it, just coincidence. Ordered a $50 ebay pump, a relatively nice copy of a $250 part. Turns out it the vacuum line was old and fell off of the solenoid that lets the air pump air enter the manifold.
